かまくら Kamakura
A festival observed in the middle of February in northern Japan, featuring snow huts in which children play house.
秋田県横手地方の「かまくら」(正月行事の一つ):400年の伝統を持つ行事。縦横2mくらいの雪室をつくり、中に祭壇を設け水神を祭る。 Kamakura Festival at Yokote in Akita Prefecture (one of the New Year holiday events): This traditional event has been held for over 400 years.A "kamakura" is an igloo-like snow house, about 2 meters square, which shelters an altar dedicated to the God of Water. 日が暮れると、かまくらの中にはろうそくが灯され、幻想的な光景を作り出します。 When night falls, candles are lit in each structure, creating a fantastic sight. 観光客はかまくらの中で甘酒を飲み火鉢で暖を取りながら、おしゃべりを楽しむことができます。 Visitors can enjoy chatting in the kamakura while drinking sweet alcoholic amazake and warming themselves at a brazier.
